Greetings from the Ministry of Health.

As some of you may be aware, the National Eye Care Program has been involved in developing a joint proposal on Child eye health for Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda since early this year for funding by Standard Chartered Bank under seeing is believing initiative.
There were two proposals being developed simultaneously under two NGO consortia led by CBM and Brien Holden Vision Institute.
I am glad to inform you that the two proposal have been accepted for funding. Our country has been selected to host the event to officially launch the program for the three countries.

This event which is organized and hosted by Standard Chartered bank will be held on tuesday 20th November 2012 at Mnazi Mmoja grounds in Dar es salaam. The guest of honor will be the Vice President of the URT. We also expect to receive Ministers for health from Kenya and Uganda together with representatives from Standard Chartered bank East Africa, IAPB- Africa and regional representatives of our partner NGOs.

 There will also be a one day screening eye camp for children below 8 years at the same grounds.

Some of you may have already received invitations from Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania.

With this note, I would like to kindly request you to participate in this important event for eye care in Tanzania.

HEALTH - URINE COLOUR INDICATORS

Yellow
“Healthy urine goes from clear to pale yellow, dark yellow to amber,” says consultant urologist Tim Terry. This depends on hydration levels, but if you’re somewhere in the yellow team, you can breathe easy.
Green
“Some antiseptics and anaesthetics give urine a green tinge,” says Terry. This is thanks to methylene blue, a dye which kidneys sometimes struggle with. Nothing too much to worry about though.
Orange
“This is a sign of liver dysfunction,” warns Terry. If your urine is this colour and you notice that your stools are white, it could be obstructive jaundice. Put down that beer – it’s GP time.
Brown
Muddy-looking pee means kidney problems. “This can be a sign of serious renal disease, even a fistula,” says Terry. That’s when your bowel leaks into your bladder. Taxi to casualty now.
Red 
This is really bad. Blood in your urine can mean a haemorrhage or cancer. “In anyone over 40 we assume it’s bladder cancer, unless proven other wise,” says Terry. Get yourself to the doctor, pronto.

PDG/PMCC LION MAJID KHAN DELIVERS REMARKABLE SIGHT FIRST MESSAGE AT AMANI CLUB EYE AND DIABETES CAMP

SPEECH BY PDG / PMCC – ABDUL MAJEED KHAN AT EYE REFRACTION & DIABETIC CAMP ORGANISED BY LIONS CLUB OF DAR-ES-SALAAM AMANI AT SHREE HINDU UNION SECONDARY SCHOOL ON 17TH NOV, 2012 

Dear Lion Leaders and Residents of Kijitonyama, I have great honour to stand in front of you to grace this magnificent event. An Amani Club event...... meant for the community.... to screen for Sight and Diabetes. I have also been privileged to open today’s camp and to make this occasion more befitting, I need to speak about the Club and the services being delivered by them and similar clubs worldwide.

Lions Club of Dar-es-Salaam Amani is one of the 7 Clubs in Dar es Salaam which was formed some 6 years ago. During this time, it has carried out remarkable projects that have proved its character and delivery. This Club is led by its charismatic leader President Lion Shofiuddin Babul.

For over 90 years, Lions Clubs worldwide are renowned to provide services and assistance of varied nature. Among the service delivered, Sight First has achieved an unparalleled target of reaching out to millions and having spent over 7 million USD.

Human Beings treasure their eyes more than any part of their body. The fear of turning blind is an anxiety to all. Blindness is a handicap that if a person suffers from, will make him a destitute and not be able to do anything worthwhile. 

Apart from Lions and other organisations having carried out so much effort to alleviate sight related problems all over the world, there still is a need of concerted endeavour to fight this affliction. 

Over 40 million people in this world are blind. Over 120 million people have eye related ailments. And there has been a Vision 2020 call to increase assistance in this direction otherwise the figures would simply double by the said time.  Because of this primary reason, Lions all over the world  have determined to provide useful support through their SIGHT FIRST Program decoded  in  Kiswahili as “UMUHIMU KWANZA NI MACHO”.

Lions Clubs are now relentlessly ensuring to prevent blindness and assist those who can be saved through immediate action. Many Clubs of Dar es Salaam and other regions are reaching out various corners of the country to provide this useful services.

I was advised by Lion Babul that this is a second camp in the same locality and due to high turn-out by residents previously, the Club decided to carry out one more camp. I am also pleased to learn that today you all would be screened, refracted, blood testing, counselled  given medicines, spectacles and cataract surgery Free of Charge. 

Therefore I am no doubt pleased with this endeavour and pride to become part and parcel of this wonderful undertaking. Therefore all residents registered today will be provided with the best medical services and those found in need of surgery will be taken to CCBRT Hospital.

With the above said, I now take this opportunity to declare this CAMP OPEN and convey my heartfelt appreciations to Amani Club members for this great work.

President Lion Babul welcomes residents of  Makumbusho at the Health Camp and declares that it was carried out due to the best cooperation given by the Hindu Mandal Primary School and residents of the area. "Today we are determined to clear all the backlog, provide best services and request all residents that when they go back home, they should inform their neighbours on this Camp as we will remain open until late hours- today," said Lion Babul.
About 200 patients were screened and provided with necessary medication and spectacles while 7 cataract patients were recorded. They will be taken to CCBRT for Surgery on 20th November 2012.

IPDG LION SATISH SHARMA STRATEGISES FOR THE REGION D DURING HIS MEET WITH RC LION RIZWAN

Region Chaiperson Lion Rizwan Qadri during his visit to Arusha met with IPDG Lion Satish Sharma, Assistant Secretary Lion Toni both of Arusha Club and President Lion Simranpal and Secretary Lion Manish Chavda of Arusha New Century Club.  

The meeting was essentially meant for the following:

1. Review of activities carried out by the club and timely reporting;
2. Plan for the 2nd MD 411B Cabinet Meeting to be held in Arusha.

IPDG Lion Satish was pleased with the developments noted in Region D. The Arusha based clubs as well as Kibo Club of Moshi were doing extremely well. He recognised that effort was necessary in Moshi for the 2 clubs that were dismally performing. However, he advised that this was on top of his Agenda and would soon call a meeting with the Lion Officers. Lion Satish further strategised for the forthcoming Cabinet Meeting and advised that advance notice, booking of venues, tourism and leadership seminar should feature in the planning and requested that RC takes this matter up with DG Office soonest.

Lion Tony advised that Arusha Club would ensure timely reporting so that all club activities appear in the BLOG. He clarified that the club was doing well and the recent Charity Walk was a huge success.

Lion Manish advised that his club was faring well in all aspects of Lionism and looked forward to assist in arranging the forthcoming meeting. He also expressed that the club's October Sight Camp activity went very well and over 60 cataract surgery were performed.  Presently, he had planned to attend the 40TH ISAAME FORUM that will be held in Bangalore, India. He will be joined by versatile Lion Godfrey Sawe.

RC Lion Rizwan thanked the Lion members he had met and especially for the hospitality at a short notice. He expressed his appreciations over the clubs' performances and asked for more concerted effort and membership drive. "Timely reporting," he emphasised "spells out efficiency and success."

The landscaped beauty of Mount Meru in Arusha as captured through the artistic arch of the  new Swaminarayan Temple.

MWANZA VALENTINES DURING WORLD SIGHT DAY AND SOCIAL EVENING

Lions Club of Mwanza organized a SOCIAL NIGHT in honor of visiting by GMT/PMCC/PDG Lion Majid Khan on Friday, 12-Oct, 2012. The club arranged games for fund raising and entertainment during the occasion.

Lions Club of Mwanza Valentine organized a fund raising event - Charity Walk on Sunday, 7-Oct-2012. During the walk the message of keeping the city clean was also conveyed. The Club collected Tshs  2,000,000 from this event to be used for Sight First campaign and other service activities. The walk was attended by Zone Chairperson Lion Sameer Shah, who later presided as the Chief Guest. 

The charity walk and both service activities were recorded by local news channel and broadcast on TV to spread awareness about Lionism in the lake city.

Sewing Machine donation (Oct 2012) aid to disadvantaged children. 
To observe 'World Service Day' on 8-Oct-2012 Lions Club of Mwanza Valentine provided to an employee of Hindu Union Hospital a sewing machine for his daughter so that she could financially become independent. The club donated the all purpose sewing machine costing Tshs. 150,000.

MZIZIMA CLUB RAISE TSHS 50ML AT DAR GYMKHANA FOR SPONSORING CLUB'S SIGHT FIRST ACTIVITIES

60 Golfers gathered on Sunday 11 Nov to participate in the Play for Sight Golf Tournament that was held at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club organised by Lions Club of Dar es Salaam Mzizima.

This was a mega fund raising annual event for the Club's Sight First Project. The first game teed off at 08:30. Breakfast and Lunch was provided to all the participants and Mzizima also enjoyed the day filled with fun and fellowship.

Lions club of Dsm Mzizima was represented by almost all the members of the club with their families and We also were fortunate to have the presence of several Lion Dignitaries among them being PDG/PMCC/GMT Leader Lion Abdul Majid Khan, Region Chairman Salim Sulemanjee with his spouse, Region Chairman of Region D Lion Rizwan Qadri, Lion Sara Qadri from Lions Club of Dar es Salaam Pwani, Sub Treasurer Lion Kishore Simzia, Lion Vrajlal Parmar, Lion Suresh Lavingia from Lions Club of Dar es Salaam City.

The tournament finished at 5.00pm and all winners were awarded prizes and trophies by the club. Lions Club of Dsm Mzizima successfully managed to raise TShs 50 Million.

The club chairman Lion Shanti Shah thanked all the sponsors for their continued support for the annual event Play for Sight.He also Thank Akil Yusufali for the his excellent support in organizing this Golf tournament.
