GROW WITH THE AFRICA THREE GROUP STRATEGY

Africa is growing fast. The population passed one billion in 2009 and just three years later another 35 million had been added. Despite the challenges we face, many people agree with the British newspaper, The Independent, which declared that Africa is poised for the kind of dynamic economic and social growth last seen in India and Asia.

Just like the continent, Africa's Lions clubs can grow rapidly. The Africa Steering Committee goal is to have 30,000 enthusiastic Lions serving those in need. The Africa Three Group Strategy is a way of looking at Africa by country, by the number of clubs and by the number of members. This strategy will help your club and district decide where to place the emphasis in your own development efforts.

If your club is in one of the Developing Group countries, geographic distance is probably an issue. Club members may have to travel far to meetings and district governors must travel far to visit clubs.

You can lessen travel times and maximize effectiveness by focusing on the Start New Sustainable Clubs section of the strategy.

If your club is in an Emerging Group nation where there is a large, untapped pool of potential Lions you may wish to focus on the Improve Service Projects and the Improve Club Experience sections.

Highly visible service projects and happy, enthusiastic members are two of the best recruitment tools available! (Happy members are much more likely to share news about their  club with others.)

If your club is in a Big Seven country your large number of happy members can be especially effective in inviting new Lions to your club.

You may want to focus on the Support Existing Clubs and Members section to take full advantage of your members' dedication and energy.

Whichever group your club is in, your top priority should be to create value for your members and your community.

You can create value by improving relationships among Lions. Be a true mentor or sponsor. Conduct a How Are Your Ratings? survey. Use the tools in the Africa Three Group Strategy.

Improving relationships among clubs. Work on projects together. Co-sponsor a  new club.

Being visible. Promote your club and its projects in the community with items from the Club Supplies store. Talk with non-Lions about your club.

Use key messages to talk with Lions and non-Lions about your club in a positive way.

Be a part of the coming growth of Africa. Grow your clubs and districts to serve the needs of our dynamic continent!

Sincerely,

The Africa Steering Committee,

Gujjubhai does it......

One afternoon a Gujjubhai was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the roadside eating grass. Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate.

He asked one man, "Why are you eating grass?"
"We don't have any money for food." the poor man replied. "We have to eat grass."
"Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll feed you," the Gujurati said.
"But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree."
"Bring them along," the Gujurati replied.
Turning to the other poor man he stated, "You come with us also."
The second man, in a pitiful voice, then said, "But sir, I also have a wife and six children with me!"
"Bring them all, as well," Gujjubhai answered.

They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine was.
Once under way, one of the poor fellows turned to the Gujurati and said,
"Sir, you are too kind.. Thank you for taking all of us with you."
Gujjubhai replied, "Glad to do it.You'll really love my place. The grass is almost a foot high."

ANECDOTE ON LIONS QUEST PROGRAM IN TANZANIA BY PMCC LION MAJID KHAN

MY DEAR REGION, ZONE CHAIRS & CLUB PRESIDENTS,

I trust this e-mail finds you in a cheerful mood for the festive season.

I firmly believe that those people who develop the ability to continuously acquire new and better forms of knowledge that they can apply to their work and their lives will be the Movers and Shakers in society for the indefinite future.

We are all aware of the Quest Programme, which at this point in time is number one priority in our association. 'I have some anecdote which I would like to share with you.'

ACHIEVEMENT OF THE PILOT PHASE OF LIONS QUEST PROGRAM IN TANZANIA:

  The steering committee has been formed to implement and promote the Quest Program.

  Two local trainers have been trained to carry out training of Lions Quest in Tanzania on availability of funds either from LCI or locally at reasonable cost without using the facilities of foreign trainers, and to meet all the cost for the Quest workshops.

  In five (5) workshops that have been conducted in the country namely: Dar-es-Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Mwanza, Tanga and Morogoro, we managed to train 160 Teachers from 80 Primary and Secondary schools and 6 lion members with the befitting arrangement and assistance of the Region & Zone chairpersons and Presidents of all the above mentioned Cities/Towns clubs.

LIONS QUEST PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION IN SCHOOL & COMMUNITIES:

The steering committee in collaboration with the lions clubs that had been given an opportunity to suggest 2 schools names (each) for the selection of teachers to be trained are responsible for coordinating, monitoring, promoting and assessing the program in those schools and submit the report of their findings to be District convenor Lion Mohamed Mulla and copy to the District Chairperson Lion Kiran Mody.

The steering committee, District convenor, District chairperson and the clubs Presidents should continue to promote the program within schools, communities and lions. They should hold promotional events to involve teachers and school administrators and explain the benefit of the program. This will make lions Quest more conducive to the teachers that were trained and take up as their program in their classrooms teaching and mentoring students.

The steering committee and the clubs should collaborate with other local organizations, Business entrepreneurs and well wishers who can donate / subsidize the cost of Quest workshops and teaching materials.

As indicated earlier we have held Quest workshops in five main Regions of Tanzania, and expect to organize more workshops to cover all the regions of Tanzania including Dar-es-Salaam once again with the local trainers to train more teachers to increase the program coverage in the country with successful dissemination of the Quest Program and wide publicity will attract the members of the community to join the clubs and support the humanitarian activities.

LIONS QUEST BOOKS FOR THE STUDENTS AND PARENTS:

We have received a good member of Lions Quest Books for the students and parents. I would advise all the participating clubs to place the order of 40 books for each participating school students and 5 books each club for the parents from District convenor Lion Mohamed Mulla. As for the Lake zone schools we have already dispatched these books to the District chairperson Lion Kiran Mody whom I would request to do the needful with the clubs in Lake Zone.

The basic ideas of working with the clubs is to involve them in learning more about the Quest Program  and extend them an opportunity to mobilize the schools and communities at arousing their curiosity and create interest of awareness and its benefits.

I trust you will be the effective ambassadors in creating a positive change in behaviour of many students of your selected schools as well other neighbouring schools.

With kind regards,

LION ABDUL MAJEED KHAN

HEALTH - URINE COLOUR INDICATORS

Yellow
“Healthy urine goes from clear to pale yellow, dark yellow to amber,” says consultant urologist Tim Terry. This depends on hydration levels, but if you’re somewhere in the yellow team, you can breathe easy.
Green
“Some antiseptics and anaesthetics give urine a green tinge,” says Terry. This is thanks to methylene blue, a dye which kidneys sometimes struggle with. Nothing too much to worry about though.
Orange
“This is a sign of liver dysfunction,” warns Terry. If your urine is this colour and you notice that your stools are white, it could be obstructive jaundice. Put down that beer – it’s GP time.
Brown
Muddy-looking pee means kidney problems. “This can be a sign of serious renal disease, even a fistula,” says Terry. That’s when your bowel leaks into your bladder. Taxi to casualty now.
Red
This is really bad. Blood in your urine can mean a haemorrhage or cancer. “In anyone over 40 we assume it’s bladder cancer, unless proven other wise,” says Terry. Get yourself to the doctor, pronto.

PDG/PMCC LION MAJID KHAN DELIVERS REMARKABLE SIGHT FIRST MESSAGE AT AMANI CLUB EYE AND DIABETES CAMP

SPEECH BY PDG / PMCC – ABDUL MAJEED KHAN AT EYE REFRACTION & DIABETIC CAMP ORGANISED BY LIONS CLUB OF DAR-ES-SALAAM AMANI AT SHREE HINDU UNION SECONDARY SCHOOL ON 17TH NOV, 2012

Dear Lion Leaders and Residents of Kijitonyama, I have great honour to stand in front of you to grace this magnificent event. An Amani Club event...... meant for the community.... to screen for Sight and Diabetes. I have also been privileged to open today’s camp and to make this occasion more befitting, I need to speak about the Club and the services being delivered by them and similar clubs worldwide.

Lions Club of Dar-es-Salaam Amani is one of the 7 Clubs in Dar es Salaam which was formed some 6 years ago. During this time, it has carried out remarkable projects that have proved its character and delivery. This Club is led by its charismatic leader President Lion Shofiuddin Babul.

For over 90 years, Lions Clubs worldwide are renowned to provide services and assistance of varied nature. Among the service delivered, Sight First has achieved an unparalleled target of reaching out to millions and having spent over 7 million USD.

Human Beings treasure their eyes more than any part of their body. The fear of turning blind is an anxiety to all. Blindness is a handicap that if a person suffers from, will make him a destitute and not be able to do anything worthwhile.

Apart from Lions and other organisations having carried out so much effort to alleviate sight related problems all over the world, there still is a need of concerted endeavour to fight this affliction.

Over 40 million people in this world are blind. Over 120 million people have eye related ailments. And there has been a Vision 2020 call to increase assistance in this direction otherwise the figures would simply double by the said time.  Because of this primary reason, Lions all over the world  have determined to provide useful support through their SIGHT FIRST Program decoded  in  Kiswahili as “UMUHIMU KWANZA NI MACHO”.

Lions Clubs are now relentlessly ensuring to prevent blindness and assist those who can be saved through immediate action. Many Clubs of Dar es Salaam and other regions are reaching out various corners of the country to provide this useful services.

I was advised by Lion Babul that this is a second camp in the same locality and due to high turn-out by residents previously, the Club decided to carry out one more camp. I am also pleased to learn that today you all would be screened, refracted, blood testing, counselled  given medicines, spectacles and cataract surgery Free of Charge.

Therefore I am no doubt pleased with this endeavour and pride to become part and parcel of this wonderful undertaking. Therefore all residents registered today will be provided with the best medical services and those found in need of surgery will be taken to CCBRT Hospital.

With the above said, I now take this opportunity to declare this CAMP OPEN and convey my heartfelt appreciations to Amani Club members for this great work.

MUNGU IBARIKI TANZANIA, MUNGU IBARIKI AFRIKA.

(Original speech in Kiswahili ---- This is a Translated version)

President Lion Babul welcomes residents of  Makumbusho at the Health Camp and declares that it was carried out due to the best cooperation given by the Hindu Mandal Primary School and residents of the area. "Today we are determined to clear all the backlog, provide best services and request all residents that when they go back home, they should inform their neighbours on this Camp as we will remain open until late hours- today," said Lion Babul.
About 200 patients were screened and provided with necessary medication and spectacles while 7 cataract patients were recorded. They will be taken to CCBRT for Surgery on 20th November 2012.
